Organist and Choirmaster

Saint James School, a historic Episcopal boarding school in the Anglo-Catholic tradition located just outside Hagerstown, Maryland, seeks to appoint an Organist, Choirmaster and Music teacher for the academic year 2026-2027 to begin in August. 

Interested candidates should be accomplished organist and choral conductor capable of teaching and conducting a chapel choir of c.30 singers comprised of ninth through twelfth graders.  The organist and choirmaster is also a member of the Fine Arts Faculty with instructional duties including:  Chapel Choir Curricular Course rehearsing four days a week, Advanced Music Theory meeting four days a week, Applied Organ and Piano lessons (up to 5 students) meeting once a week per lesson, and collaboration with performances throughout the year including contemplative chapel performances, the Winter Musical, and the 8th Grade Christmas production.  The choir sings two choral Eucharists (Sunday and Wednesday morning) every week with a heavier load before Christmas and during Holy Week and Easter.  The choir travels 2-4 times a year.  Duties in the chapel include playing organ for Sunday morning Eucharists and daily morning chapel Monday through Friday, direction of Compline each Sunday evening, liturgy planning in consultation with clergy, and oversight of maintenance of the pipe organ and piano in the chapel.  Every faculty member advises 5-7 students, eats with the community at lunch and dinner, is assigned to a weekly evening duty rotation, and is a member of a weekend duty team, and so shares in the general supervision of the school. Housing, utilities, meals in term, and full benefits are all included in this position.
