Plans Updated For Turner Athletic Center

Saint James School is excited to release updated plans for the Turner Athletic Center. A new general contractor has been hired, and we anticipate construction will begin this spring.  The site dedication will occur during Alumni Weekend on Saturday, April 30.

Construction of the building was delayed initially due to COVID, but the school used that time to reevaluate its needs. Working with MSB Architects, we were able to further develop the design of the building so it will now function more broadly and serve all our sports with enhanced fitness areas and an indoor turf space.

The redesigned Turner Athletic Center will serve our recreational and intramural needs during the winter, in bad weather in the spring and fall, and all year round in the evenings and on weekends. The main lobby will open to four athletic spaces:  the performance basketball/volleyball gymnasium, the indoor turf field, the wrestling room, and the practice basketball/volleyball/tennis gymnasium.

The latter two spaces will be located in the field house of the existing Alumni Hall.  New locker rooms, equipment spaces, and a weight room will also be added in Alumni Hall.  The new spaces being built are the performance gym, indoor turf field, visiting team rooms, and concession area, and will connect to the renovated Alumni Hall via a spacious and light-filled lobby.

The lobby will feature a glass-back wall with a view of the playing fields and the mountains beyond, where students and visitors can gather at tables and enjoy food from the snack bar.

Because the design has evolved, the cost of the building has also increased. Although we have raised over $10 million as part of the Make A Difference campaign, we continue to fundraise for this extraordinary new building.  If you are interested in supporting this project, please reach out to Joseph Regan, Associate Director of Development, at jcregan@stjames.edu or 301-671-4894.

The Turner Athletic Center will transform the athletics experience at Saint James, and we are excited to see what's ahead for future generations of Saints.
