Varsity Cross Country

Coach: David Hutchings

The Varsity Cross Country teams were fortunate to return three captains from last season. Returning sixth-form leaders Drew Weisgerber, Chris James, and Elise Bamforth were joined by Kayla Handley to give us senior leaders at the front of our races and strong examples in practice and on campus. We focused on improving our individual times and competing in races to lower our collective score.

Our boys’ team grew greatly in number from last season and were again led by Drew Weisgerber who finished his career with a personal best of 19:01 run this season at the Mercersburg Invitational. He led the team in all but one race when third former CJ Stanley finished first. The boys' top seven routinely featured two or three third form runners and a fifth form runner.

The girls’ team featured greater depth with the improvement shown by fourth former Gabby Robinson, who shaved over a minute from her times last season and regularly finished third on the team. Fifth former Júlia Heredia, who is running cross country for the first time, led the team in most races, earned medals for top finishes in four races, and ended with a personal best of 22:56, also at Mercersburg. Elise Bamforth consistently pushed Júlia and demonstrated great leadership with both teams. She plans to continue running cross country in college next season

It will be hard to replace the speed and leadership from many of our sixth form runners, but there is a passion for running evident in our younger students, and we look forward to seeing how they seize the new opportunities in front of them next year.
