Coach: Karl Yergey

We’ve heard a lot in Chapel thus far this year about perseverance and dogs, and as much as like to talk about Dax and Riff following the Golf Team on Instagram, I am here to say a few words about perseverance.  I refer to the “perseverance” which comes with following-through to the end in a difficult season where we frequently came up on the short side of victories, in some cases by mere strokes.

Our overall record in 2022 was 6-21, but there are two highlights to mention:  first, finishing 7th of 10 teams in an 18-hole tournament at Locust Hill in Charles Town, WV in early September on a course none of the players had seen before, and second, defeating St. Maria Goretti by 1 stroke in the final match of the year to earn a split with the Gaels for the season. The single stroke difference could have been one of Danny McElroy’s near 300-yard drives or, more likely, a lipped-out putt on the aerated greens at Chambersburg Country Club in late October which failed to go in for St. Maria Goretti.  Yet, we ended with a “W” when it mattered and gave us a positive feeling at the end of the season.  We persevered.

Despite 21 losses, I have certain things of which to be proud in 2022: Danny McElroy (Fourth Form) continued his emergence as a top player in the County and the MAC but added “swing coach” to his repertoire by helping his teammates with their processes when they needed a voice other than mine or Anthony’s older brother, Frankie Corsi, our volunteer assistant; Fourth Formers Jack Bakersmith and Brooks Carpenter fought through swing plane and clubface troubles to muscle their way through to the end as seasoned players must for their teammates; Tucker Newman (Fifth Form) improved his score in the MAC Tournament by 10 strokes; and Fifth Formers Eliason Arnett and Zach Kumar were consistently recognized – whether in face-to-face conversations or by emails sent to the School after the fact – by opponents’ families and coaches for their sportsmanship and gentlemanly behavior on the golf course.

In the end, while the scoreboard may not have shown it often, this team earned victory after victory when it mattered.
