Having launched in the spring of 2021, our sixth formers participate in a series of Senior Seminars designed to teach them about finances and prepare them for their first year at college.
The students attended Financial Literacy 101 and 102 with Dr. Brendan Fitzsimmons, president of Groh Industries who holds a PhD in business management and is also an Accredited Wealth Manager. Dr. Fitzsimmons instructed the students on financial basics, such as establishing credit by using a credit card for small purchases. He also demonstrated the impact their investments can have if they start now rather than waiting 10 or 20 years.
The College 101 session was led by two representatives from Hood College: Sarah Transits, Director of Student Engagement and Orientation, and Ali Imhoff, Associate Director of Admission.
They polled students at Hood on do's and don'ts of college life. The overarching theme was to be aware of the resources available to you on campus and use them—such as counseling, academic, and career services. They also talked generally about mental health and gave some practical tips like the importance of going to class and building relationships with your advisor or professors.
The Senior Seminar series will now be held annually at the end of each school year.
