PARENT NEWSLETTER

Class of 2018

Greetings from the Dean's Office!

We have reached the last week of school! It is amazing how quickly this year has gone by--especially, I'm sure, for those about to graduate. This week has been fun-filled for our soon-to-be-departed students. Starting on Sunday, they attended the Sixth Form BBQ (boys) or tea (girls), and had Senior Skip Day on Monday (where several took their turn trying to dunk me in the dunk tank). Now they take their "final" exams and soak up the last few days of their high school career.

Congratulations to the cast and crew of Brigadoon! This was truly a remarkable display of student talent. I always love seeing our multi-talented students, who just two weeks ago were scoring goals or catching pop-flys, and now are singing and dancing on stage.  A special thanks to those dedicated Sixth Formers who made their final performance on the Saint James stage.

A note to parents of day students: Please make sure your student brings his/her key FOB to their D or B exam on Thursday or A exam or lunch on Friday.  Keys and FOBs will be collected and turned into the business office. Any FOBs not turned in will be charged to student accounts.

On Friday, we will host our first Saint James Field Day to help cap off exam week.  The school has been split into two teams; maroon and white. These teams will be split into ten groups that will rotate through competing in ten events. I hope this proves to be a fun event for the students and faculty alike.

Saturday is our Prize Service (2:00 PM), which is required of ALL students. Baccalaureate service for our 5th and 6th form students, 6th form families is also Saturday (6:00 PM). Both these events will be held in the chapel.  Please keep in mind that Baccalaureate is an evening service and may not be appropriate for young children.

Finally, we look forward to seeing many of you on campus this weekend for Commencement. The ceremony starts at 11:00 a.m. on the Senior Circle, but we recommend that you arrive early if you hope to get a seat close to the steps. Second-Fifth Form students should meet in the McIntyre room by 10:30 AM on Sunday. We are keeping an eye on the weather forecast, and hoping for clear skies. However, in the event of rain the ceremony will be held in Alumni Hall.

Wishing you all a happy, relaxing summer! Students should report back for Welcome Week on August 18th (international students may return on August 17th).

If you are the parent of a boarding student who lives nearby, Friday from 12:00-3:30 PM and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM are great windows to come and move most of your child's belongings out.

Sincerely,

Steve Lachut
Dean of Students

WEEKEND ACTIVITIES

HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!

IMPORTANT NOTES

From the Assistant Headmaster:

Forms for next year's school year (enrollment forms, etc) will be available through Blackbaud in mid-June.  To find the forms, click on the drop-down arrow next to your name (upper right-hand corner).  Then, click "files and forms".  The due date for all forms is August 1.  Please note that our new policy is that all custodial parents will need to sign the forms, so custodial parents will log in separately to complete the forms.  Medical forms can be downloaded from the Resource Board in Blackbaud and presented to your physician.

Advisor comments and classroom grades should be available in Blackbaud by 3:00 PM on June 7.

Don't forget to create an MBS account to see what books are offered next year (www.mbsdirect.net).  While you are not required to use MBS, they do make purchasing and shipping to the School very easy.

Please take a last look at the student course selections.  Soon after the students depart, scheduling will begin.  It's far easier to make adjustments now rather than when class times and sections have been created.

Finally, don't forget to review the schedule for the end-of-year (see attached letter)  If you are confused by anything in the busy, waning days, please contact us.

From the Arts Department:

Reminders to music students:

Musical Instruments should be taken home by Friday.  If you need to store it at school during the summer, it must be labeled with the student's name, and taken up to the choir room for safekeeping. The school is not responsible for instruments left behind in the cubbies.

Registration forms for lessons next year will be sent out in June.

From the School Store:

Sixth Formers will be going to "Cash Only" starting Monday, May 28th for school store purchases. This will include their Graduation Tie purchases which are $45. If they want them charged to their school store account they must purchase it before the 28th.

Show your Saint James pride! New items, including a special 175th anniversary t-shirt, are available for purchase in the online SJS School Store.  There is also a selection of sweatshirts, polo shirts, jackets, coffee mugs, and children's apparel. Go to www.SJSschoolstore.com to check it out!

From the Athletic Department:

Lost and Found

Please encourage your students to clean out their athletic lockers and to stop by the Alumni Hall Lobby to peruse our collection of Lost and Found items.  Any uniform or equipment items that were checked out from the school should also be returned to the Athletic Office.

The Saint James Summer Games are back and bigger than ever!

The Athletic Department is pleased to announce that last year's summer fitness program with a competitive twist, will be expanded to include our entire student body, faculty and even parents (if you want!).  With the goal of forming fitness habits that will  facilitate long term health and wellness, the Games provide a level of accountability and prizes to the winning teams.  All returning students will be assigned to a team, but parents will need to opt-in.  For more information or to join the parent team, please contact Laurie Douglass at lddouglass@stjames.edu.

From the Parents' Association:

We know it is hard to believe, but as the year winds down, our Annual Fund is still under way!   It truly is participation that makes this drive a success.  Please help us reach our 100% participation goal.  Every gift is appreciated and makes a difference in the lives of our students. Make your gift online.

From the Nurse:

Parents, if your child needs ANY prescription medications administered on campus next year,  please be sure to have your physician complete this authorization form with your signature as well.  Please make a few extra copies as they are needed for any short term medications such as antibiotics.  We cannot administer any prescription medications next year without first having this form completed by you and the physician.
