PARENT NEWSLETTER

SJS Newsletter: Spring is in the air

Greetings from the Dean's Office!

Welcome back!  I hope everyone enjoyed a little extra time with your student over break and got to hear about the many great things happening at Saint James.  We also thank you for sending them back and allowing us to continue to grow and learn in our community.

Over break, our baseball team had a great showing in Florida while our girls' and boys' lacrosse teams faced inconsistent weather in Hagerstown but got some valuable practices in.  All of our spring teams seem excited and ready for action now that we're back into the swing of things.

We are also excited to announce that Ms. La Nasa is starting an Improv Club during Thursday activities period, and a Monologue Group that will meet on Wednesday evenings throughout the spring.  These are both exciting opportunities that I hope many of our students will take advantage of this spring.

Lastly, please don't forget about Extracurricular Activities and the College Application Process at 7:00pm tonight in Kellam Auditorium. Third, Fourth, and Fifth Form students are required to attend, and parents are also encouraged to attend.

Sincerely,

Steve Lachut
Dean of Students

IMPORTANT NOTES

Student Travel Opportunities:

Mr. and Mrs. Lachut will be taking a group of adventurous upper-formers to hike a portion of el Camino Portugues, a pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, Spain (Camino de Santiago). The trip will take place over Spring Break 2020, and the group will walk approximately 120km along the Portuguese Coastal Route. Because of the reflective nature of such a journey, applications will first open to rising Fifth and Sixth Formers, and parents are welcome and encouraged to join their student for this experience. The cost of the trip will be finalized soon based on the number of travelers, but the trip is poised to be relatively economical due to its very nature as a more modest, meaningful trek.

Please reach out to Mrs. Lachut with questions or parent interest. Students will have a series of informational opportunities in the next two weeks, followed by an enrollment period. This website also has a lot of information on the Camino experience.

Mr. McDonald will be offering his fifth International trip in the Spring of 2020.  Next year's Spring break destination is Belize!  For information check out this link.  Enrollment will begin the third week in March.

Miss Miller will chaperone a trip to Vienna, Prague, and Venice over the Thanksgiving vacation.  Right now, she is in the exploratory stage to see if the trip is viable, especially given the relatively short time period to get the trip organized.  Read more about the trip. If you have any questions about your son or daughter participating, or you yourself, please email Miss Miller at cmiller@stjames.edu.

From the School Store:

Parents of Sixth Formers--Balfour will be meeting with all members of the class of 2019 after lunch on Thursday, March 21, with information about commencement announcements. If you are interested in sending these out, please check with your student to make sure they get an information packet on Thursday.

If you have any questions regarding these announcements, please contact Heather Marshall in the Saint James School Store (hmarshall@stjames.edu).

From the Development Office:

From The Parents Association:

The Annual Fund is still going on, let's keep working towards our goal!  We need everyone to help us reach 100% participation.  We cannot express enough, the importance of participation…it is the best way to say, "thank you" to our school.  Please remember that you have until June to make your donations and you can spread them out over the next several months.  Our school faculty, staff and Board of Trustees all donate at 100% and so can we! Make your gift online.

While we love seeing our trusty volunteers, we also truly love seeing new faces at school!  Our spring concessions, the KCF Egg Hunt,  and other volunteer opportunities are online now, please take a minute to see how you can help.   We hope to see you soon! Sign up at: iVolunteer
