October 4, 2019 PARENT NEWSLETTER Greetings from the Dean's Office!
It was so nice to see so many of you on campus this past weekend. It is always great to be able to put a face to a name. Our students always enjoy being able to display their athletic and artistical talents with our greater school community. As much as they may not admit it, I believe that they truly appreciate the interaction you have with their teachers as well. I hope each of you that were able to attend enjoyed the weekend, and for those of you who were not, we hope to see you in the future.
Don't forget that long weekend begins Thursday, October 10, at 12:20 PM. Boarders must return to campus no later than 9:30 PM on Monday, October 14, and classes resume the morning of October 15. If you have any questions regarding long weekend, please let me know.
Lastly, this week's article is about a new app often linked to Snapchat called YOLO. YOLO is an app that allows users to anonymously ask or answer questions. As I'm sure many of you know, or can imagine, student use of social media is ever-evolving. When I started working at Saint James, Facebook was it, and now our students laugh at the idea of using Facebook. Please take a moment to read this article and I hope it will allow you to have an informed conversation with your child.
Sincerely,
Steve Lachut WEEKEND ACTIVITIES Duty Captains: Mr. Yergey & Mr. Camp Notes: Open Weekend

From College Counseling:
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) has officially opened for the Class of 2020, so please take time to fill this online document out as soon as you are able. You may also need to complete CSS Profile - please check individual college website to determine if this is a requirement.
From the School Nurse:
The influenza vaccine will be offered on campus to all students whose parents desire them to be vaccinated. Written permission is required; please sign this permission slip and return by October 12 to have the vaccine administered. You may fax your request to the Infirmary at 301-671-2591 or email jcampbell@stjames.edu.
There will be a $25.00 fee charged to the student's school account for this vaccination. This vaccine will be available at the school during the month of October. Students are strongly encouraged to get the influenza vaccine, either on campus, with their own doctor, or other clinics where the vaccine is offered.
Should you have any questions about this vaccine, please do not hesitate to contact School Nurse Jamie Campbell at jcampbell@stjames.edu or 301-733-9330 ext. 3006.
From the Athletic Department:
We have prepared team specific "store fronts" so that parents, grandparents, and athletes can purchase Saint James swag at reduced prices since we will be buying in quantity. Here is the link to all of the store fronts for the Fall Season teams.
Choir Families:
You should have all received the preliminary information for the spring break choir trip by email or in person at Family Weekend. A response from all families is requested no later than Monday, October 7. If you have questions, or did not receive the letter and two forms, please contact Linda Stowe. Thank you in advance for your prompt reply!
From the Parents Association:
(Thank you, thank you, thank you!! We cannot begin to thank all the parents who attended, helped, and purchased tickets to our event. We loved meeting everyone and hope to see you all much more in the future.)
Our campus looks beautiful thanks to our campus decorating committee chaired by Laura Zimmerman and Maura Fisher. If you missed this weekend, we hope you get to campus before the shift to the Christmas decorations…which will be equally beautiful.
Our cocktail party was amazing (as usual) thanks to the leadership of the Avellanedas and Tina Butcher. Thank you to the Thiele family for the generous donation of a custom-made suit, won by Douglas Williams! Thank you to the Tophams for the delicious pastalaya and Boudin balls. If you missed their Louisiana fare this time, be sure to catch them next time they bring it to us. Thank you to the parents and faculty who helped set-up, worked behind the scenes to prepare, check-in, and those who jumped right in to help clean-up at the end of the event. We are very fortunate to have so many who donate their time.
We also could not pull off such a beautiful event without the support from Saint James School staff. Chef Gabe, Chef Cody, and all the Sage staff really outdid themselves this year with their delicious farm to table menu! Kim Dudash and Jennifer Sherman make our event possible with their endless behind-the-scenes efforts and we truly appreciate their help.
Our auction winners are as follows: 10 front row seats at graduation (right side): Topham family 10 front row seats at graduation (left side): Grandstaff family Custom suit donated by the Thiele family: Douglas Williams VIP parking for graduation: Welty family Game day basket: Clifton Gorham Wine country basket: Avellaneda family Honor Code posters with original signatures, class of 2020: Almany and Farrell families
We are excited to raise money to help make the campus a better place for all of the kids. If you are wanting to help, please visit our volunteer site to find out if something works for you. If you are able to jump in and help us in any other capacity, please reach out to Donna Almany
