Greetings from the Dean's Office!

This week is full of excitement and activity.

Winter sports practices officially started yesterday.  All of our students have transitioned from displaying  their talents in their fall sport to testing their ability in wrestling, martial arts, basketball, dance, running, strength & conditioning, or Shakespeare. Although competition doesn't start until after Thanksgiving, our students are constantly improving.

We're gearing up for the Fall Mummer's Society Production of Twelve Angry Jurors this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  This year's play offers a change of venue, as the play will be staged in the dance studio instead Kellam Auditorium, and a Sunday matinee performance has also been added.  More information is available below on the play.

This week of activity leads into the end of the first trimester, including our first exam week of the year, which culminates with Fall Break.

The photo above is from Ms. Simpson's Spanish classes, who made Day of the Dead Sugar cookies last week.

Sincerely,

Steve Lachut
Dean of Students

IMPORTANT NOTES

From the Academic Office:

We have a lot of "moving parts" as we head into exam week.  I have highlighted some issues below:

  • If you have not logged into Blackbaud, you cannot see Marking Period 1 grades and comments.  You will need to log in to see advisor comments and trimester 1 grades.
  • Included with trimester 1 grades are advisor comments, and not teacher comments.  These will be found in "Official Note" in the student profile.
  • Contact Jennifer Martirano (jmartirano@stjames.edu) for Blackbaud login information.
  • Exams begin Tuesday, November 14.
    • The last exam ends Friday, November 17 at 1:30 PM (G block).
    • Students may depart for break after their last exam or obligation.
    • Each exam block is 2 hours.
  • Students who need to schedule flights for Saturday, November 18 may remain on campus Friday, November 17.
  • Boarding students should return Monday, November 27 between 6:00 and 9:30 PM.
  • Boarding students may not sign out for dinner during exam week.  All dinners are served family style.
  • Exam review periods are built into the schedule each day.
  • Morning buses are scheduled as normal during exam week.
  • Sports are required each afternoon during exam week.  Students should verify with their coach as to the practice hours.
  • School dress on Monday, November 13.  Casual dress for exam days (though no athletic wear).

2017 Christmas Poinsettia Donation:

At 8:00 PM on Saturday, December 16, and Sunday, December 17, Saint James School will present its annual Service of Lessons and Carols for Advent and Christmas. Lessons and Carols at Saint James is modeled after the service begun in 1918 at King's College, Cambridge. The candlelight service consists of scripture, congregational hymns, and carols sung by the School choir. The Saint James Chapel will once again be beautifully decorated for the occasion. This is a wonderful part of our School tradition and all families are invited to attend.

In order to enable more families to participate in the service, and to help defray some of the costs, we invite donations in the amount of $20 for flowers — mainly poinsettias. The flowers will be used at the service of Lessons and Carols and at the Christmas Eve Mass. Please complete the form with your donation by December 8, 2017.
