June 5, 2020 PARENT NEWSLETTER Congratulations to the Class of 2020!
View the Class of 2020 matriculation list or the Class of 2020 webpage to help us celebrate their achievements. IMPORTANT NOTES From the Headmaster:
Greetings from Saint James School!
Having completed our third trimester online and our "virtual" Commencement exercises remarkably successfully, we are expecting to return to campus in September. Obviously, this will require some planning and some continuing restrictions and "adjustments," as we respond to what is still a developing situation both in terms of government regulations and what is prudent and safe for us to do, so expect to hear more from us as the summer advances.
Meanwhile, my congratulations and best wishes to all of you. I hope that your summer is restful and fun, albeit more quiet, I suspect, than what you are used to, and I look forward to seeing you back on campus in the Fall. I am happy to report that the new Pohanka Fine Arts Center will be finished and ready to receive you and you will notice and enjoy some other renovations and improvements as well.
With my very best wishes, as always,
Father Dunnan
Resources for Parents:
During this difficult time in our country, we wanted to provide a few resources that might be of use in talking about race and racism with teenagers.
- Lawrence Blum, "Five Things High School Students Should Know About Race." This 2012 Harvard Education Letter article provides some good insights and advice on how to talk about racism with high school students.
- Ijeoma Oluo, So You Want to Talk About Race (Seal Press, 2018). This book provides matter-of-fact, straightforward answers to questions about race that many in the majority are afraid to ask. It can serve as a good spring board to answer high schoolers' questions about race in a very honest way. There is a Kindle purchase option for this New York Times bestseller.
- Resources from "Teaching Tolerance, A project of the Southern Poverty Law Center":
From the Chaplain:
2020-2021 Saint James Chapel Vestry The Chapel Vestry is the student-run governing body of the Saint James Chapel. As such, it assists the Chaplain in executing the direction of the School's worship life and community outreach. Its membership is composed of all officers and members of the Guild of Sacristans, the Senior Reader (representing the Guild of Readers), the Senior Usher (representing the Guild of Ushers), the Senior Choristers (representing the Saint James Choir), and the Chaplain as the Vestry's ex-officio presiding officer. Congratulations to the following students appointed to membership in the 2020-2021 Saint James Chapel Vestry:
The following prayer is offered for the incoming Chapel Vestry: O Eternal God, the foundation of all wisdom and the source of all courage: Enlighten with your grace the Vestry of the Saint James Chapel, and so rule their minds and guide their counsels, that in all things they may seek your glory and promote the mission of your Church and this School. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Happy Summer (But Don't Forget About Service-Learning)! Five reasons why summer is the best time of the year: 1. Sunshine
